EasyRam Frequently asked questions

Please see below for commonly asked questions regarding the purchase or our Rams
  • Q 1: How can you tell which is the most Maternal or Terminal ram?

ANS 1: All rams have a Maternal and a Terminal Index ascribed to them ( see “Recording” for definition of terms). A few rams excel on both counts but the majority are either more Maternal or more Terminal on their figs.

ANS 2: EasyDams, introduced fully for the first time this year, are a full maternal composite breed and so they have a maternal index that also includes “Meat – growth and yield” figures in the Index.

  • Q 2: Are your shearlings just the rams you could not sell as lambs?

NO. Normally the ram lambs we sell are the older ones and the shearlings are the younger ones with many out of ewe lambs. The younger groups of lambs are not seen as lambs so are not picked over.

  • Q 3: I want a tight lambing pattern. Surely if I run as many ewes as you suggest with my EasyRam tups I will be lambing for ever?

NO absolutely not. The tupping ability of our rams is fully proven and we will happily refer you to neighbour who have already gone down this route so you can discuss your concerns.

We would however recommend that you run more than 1  ram with a tupping group of ewes whenever possible. If you cannot do this then we recommend you swap tups around after the first cycle.

  • Q 4: If I worked my normal rams this hard they would surely melt and die. Why don’t your’s?

Partially genetics and partially management. All rams in New Zealand have been bred to run with large mobs of ewes. They have been selected for the ability to do this for many many years. Our rams are only fed grass so they are FIT not FAT.

They are the “sexual athletes of the sheep world”. Furthermore because they have never eaten concentrates they have no violent diet change from cereals to grass when they leave here and so they can happily serve ewes and go away to graze afterwards.

YOU WILL NEVER SEE A MELTING EASYRAM!
